Adult Swim's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Major Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.

In October of last year, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the network launched a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a animated take of a serene talk show. During a period often defined by bleakness, this show's earnestness struck a chord and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Executive Acclaim

The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat appeal.

"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about watching this lovable family navigate their everyday routines.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to help comedy break out of its prevailing sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.

“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

What Comes Next

Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to experience the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
