Antony Price, Famed for Creating Looks for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer responsible for some of the most iconic looks worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the soft-colored suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
This news arrives shortly after he unveiled his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by the late Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he began designing menswear at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by outfits on model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in shaping sculptural silhouettes established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he started creating outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including various looks for her American tour following her marriage.
After a career spanning half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
