The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
