Grief as Popular South African DJ Killed in the City of Johannesburg.
A prominent South African media personality and entertainer has been shot dead in the country's largest city Johannesburg, causing national outrage across a nation struggling with persistent crime.
Warrick Stock, widely recognized as DJ Warras, was attacked in the central business district on the afternoon of Tuesday.
Police said the 40-year-old entertainer was confronted by three suspects, with one shot at him before escaping on foot.
The purpose behind the incident has not been established and no suspects have been apprehended have taken place, police said.
How It Happened
Authorities said that Stock was attacked as he was exiting a premises near the Carlton Centre.
He had been present for hours at the site overseeing the installation of safety equipment, which had been controversially occupied by squatters, it was reported.
"The report indicates the man was confronted by three unknown suspects after parking his vehicle, and they began shooting at him before running from the location on foot," authorities said.
CCTV footage showed a suspect with dreadlocked hair and dressed in what appeared to be a protective services outfit shooting on Stock before making his escape.
The DJ sought to escape after he was hit but succumbed to his injuries on the opposite side of the road.
It was further revealed that Stock had an weapon on his person and it was not a robbery during the attack.
Key evidence, like bullet casings, were discovered at the scene.
Investigation Ongoing
Police have appealed members of the public who may have have information to come forward.
"We know they walked a long distance after the shooting, and investigators have been tracking them to determine their whereabouts," added an official.
Outpouring of Grief
His sister, Nicole Stock, said the family was struggling to process his death.
"I am in shock. I cannot express the pain," were her words.
"Everyone understood he was a champion for numerous individuals. He addressed issues courageously about issues not many people were ready to speak about. This is a tremendous loss."
She appealed to the community to refrain from sharing graphic images from the scene, noting this was an incredibly difficult time, above all for Stock's three sons.
A Multifaceted Career
Stock was the presenter of Ngicel' iVisa, a reality show that was broadcast on a South African digital satellite entertainment channel.
Beyond his media career, Stock was engaged in various business ventures, including security provision, supplying elite guarding services and securing prestigious gatherings across South Africa.
He was also understood to participate in real estate operations and participated in building evictions.
National Shock
His murder has sent the nation reeling and triggered an outpouring of tributes from his fans, the authorities and various organizations.
A cabinet official commented he was angry and saddened by Stock's murder.
"He spoke his truth boldly and honestly. He even criticized me and my decisions as a minister. He was a pure example of who we must aspire to be," the minister added.
A political leader stated the "shocking killing of DJ Warras in broad daylight is a shock for all South Africans".
A broadcasting director expressed that "DJ Warras was far beyond a face of a reality series. He was a gifted communicator, a true devotee of sound and a generous spirit who brought happiness and vitality to every moment on screen. His artistic passion left an indefinable mark."
In a communication, the channel he worked for said Stock was known for his presence, warmth and sharp wit, adding that his memory "will endure".
