Meteorologists have indicated an icy commencement to the new year, with snow expected over large parts of the UK. Revelers have been told to dress warmly as sub-zero temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Events Go Ahead Amid Forecasts

Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay celebrations are planned to take place, unlike last year's calling-off. This proceeds amid weather alerts for snow in northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so extra layers will be needed," noted the national forecaster.

Displays Under Open but Cold Skies

Across the UK, the weather is set to be ideal for fireworks celebrations, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. The mercury are expected to be cold, so extra layers a necessity, said forecasters.

Further north, skies will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to affect visibility for watching fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Extensive Advisories for Friday

As we enter Friday, snow alerts have been issued for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

Temperatures Forecast to Plummet Further

Going into the new year, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are forecast to plummet as wintry showers and strong winds are predicted to hit the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Medical Warnings Issued

In addition, amber-level health advisories are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with the mercury likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.
