Plans for Trump-Putin Summit Delayed Days After Hungarian Capital Talks Proposed

There are "no arrangements" for American leader Donald Trump to meet Russia's Vladimir Putin "in the immediate future", a administration representative has announced.

This past week Trump said he and the Russian president would hold talks in Budapest in the coming fortnight to examine the Ukraine conflict.

A planning session between US Secretary of State Secretary Rubio and his opposite number Sergei Lavrov was scheduled to occur recently - but the White House said the two had had a "constructive" conversation and that a face-to-face session was not "needed".

The White House withheld additional specifics on the reason the negotiations had been postponed.

Previous Developments

The US president had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit over the phone with the Russian leader, a day before meeting Ukrainian President President Zelensky in the White House.

Some reports indicated his meeting with the Ukrainian leader had been a "contentious discussion", with those familiar suggesting Trump had pushed him to relinquish significant territories of eastern Ukraine as part of a agreement with Moscow.

Yet, on this week Trump endorsed a ceasefire proposal supported by Kyiv and EU officials to pause the hostilities on the existing battle lines.

"Freeze the lines in its current state," he remarked.

Moscow has consistently objected against halting the existing front lines.

Moscow was exclusively seeking "long-term, sustainable peace", Lavrov commented on this week, implying that pausing conflict would merely represent a short-term truce.

Political Perspectives

The "underlying reasons" of the war required resolution, Lavrov said, using Russian diplomatic language for a range of comprehensive conditions that involve the acceptance of full Russian sovereignty over the Donbas as well as the disarmament of the country – a impossible condition for Ukraine and its European partners.

The Ukrainian president stated discussions about the front line were the "start of negotiations" but that Moscow was "taking all measures" to avoid diplomacy.

He further commented the only topic that could make Moscow "become engaged" was that of the provision of long-range weapons to Ukraine.

Weapons Discussions

Putin's unplanned conversation with the US leader recently occurred before rumors that the United States was planning to provide long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukrainian forces that could theoretically target Russian territory.

The Ukrainian leader said it was the missile discussion that had compelled Moscow to engage in discussion. The discussion regarding the missiles had proven to be a "valuable contribution" in diplomacy", he added.
