Scream OG Star the Actor Fears He Could Ruin the Franchise with Scream 7.

The highly anticipated slasher sequel Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters in the coming year, and it is gearing up for a major family reunion. This latest installment signals the legendary comeback of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the previous film. She will, as usual, be joined by Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only fan-favorite characters returning to the fray.

"Returning to a character you played in your twenties when you're 55 was a daunting task that gave me sleepless nights," the actor reveals.

An Unexpected Return for Fallon Characters

Reports have confirmed that a trio of different characters from past films are set to return in this latest sequel, even though dying in prior movies. The precise method of their resurrection remains a mystery. Fans should prepare for the return of the beloved and nearly unkillable cop Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and Scream 3 killer Roman Bridger, and a member of the original killer pair, Stu Macher.

The Pressure of Legendary Legacy

For Matthew Lillard, returning to the series for the first occasion since a brief appearance is a dream come true, even if he is terrified about the audience response. The actor vividly recalls the exact moment he received the news from the series creator.

"I recall the conversation. I recall the pleasantries. I recall him asking. That moment is indelibly imprinted on my mind," he states. "So I'm really proud to be back. I'm really excited to be back."

Stu Macher has attained cult status in the decades since the original film premiered, which made Lillard feeling very trepidatious.

"Truthfully, that's a role that is infamous, for better or worse," he notes. "A part that is now embodied in every single Ghostface mask that appears every Halloween."

The Fear of Disappointing the Fandom

Now that filming has concluded, Lillard is waiting as everyone else to see the finished film. He admits to feeling immense anxiety about not wanting to be the one who ruins the beloved series.

"It's either a hit and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard observes. "Going into it, I don't know if the film will be successful. I don't know if people are eager to see me. I've definitely seen plenty of people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this idea?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of pressure to not ruin the franchise. I don't want people leaving Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"

Speculation and Excitement Abound

While many longtime fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others return persists. Perhaps they exist as manifestations in Sidney's consciousness, similar to a previous plot device. Alternatively, maybe they are in some way still living in a strange shared scenario. The possibility of a meta-horror story, reminiscent of classic horror movies, also exists.

Audiences will find out the answer when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
