The Details Known Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Terror Attack
A minimum of 16 lives perished and more than 40 were wounded when assailants opened fire at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have labeled a terrorist attack.
According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the number of fatalities is 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to the hospital.
Those who died are yet to be publicly named, but authorities state their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.
Listed are the individuals who are known to date.
Eli Schlanger
London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Known as a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She recounted the moments before the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she said.
The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Publicly, a senior official said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was also killed in the incident, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still under care, with several in serious condition. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.
One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
