As any significant honors show nears, one notices a demand to include of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
My colleague made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition in any category in 2014
- Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
- Limited numbers of logic titles barely qualified for niche award types
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're compact experiences, however the design of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
