The Reason Real Madrid Have 'Total Faith' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch

The teenager has featured in seven games for Real Madrid, featuring five appearances in the starting lineup.

Whenever a 18-year-old creates Real Madrid a historic moment in a pivotal Champions League tie against Manchester City, it naturally attracts acclaim and the spotlight.

During his first start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the club - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the 15-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil last-16 first leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his club debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then helped Los Blancos defeat the English champions in Tuesday's return to secure a quarter-final place.

Aged 18 years old, Pitarch became the team's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating star Vini Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.

A Meteoric Rise From La Fabrica

The midfielder is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising protegees.

He signed for Real from CD Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe's youth teams, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

Pitarch progressed to the reserve side and it was in a pre-season game in which they faced the senior squad, then managed by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced the previous coach in January.

Reports would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," adding he stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and drive he added to the team.

'His Best Attribute Is His Personality'

In the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso called up the youngster to train with the senior squad and awarded him playing time during the warm-up matches.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the defining moment in his development as he was introduced as a late substitute in each leg against Benfica that set up the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I've dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the first day I started playing the game, each day you go to train and every day you play a match," stated the player after his first appearance.

"I've just achieved my dream with the best team in the planet and in the best competition."

Given a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he spent several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his place for the next four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opportunity.

Pitarch has seized it with displays that have belied his age and inexperience.

"He is a very quick player, and you can observe what he's capable of," remarked the coach. "He's extremely energetic, with great stamina, work-rate and mobility."

The player's mindset has also stood out to his coach.

"His greatest quality is his personality," added he. "He always wants the ball, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I realize fans might be surprised to see him make his debut in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had total trust in him to perform his normal game.

"He will keep receiving opportunities with the first team. It's a pleasure to have a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and was raised fully immersed in the local game, progressing through youth setups before joining the club's famous youth academy.

He possesses dual Moroccan and Spanish nationality, offering him the choice to play for either country at senior international level.

According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent different countries at youth level without being locked in, with the final decision only binding once they play in a official full international.

Pitarch has played for Spain at underage levels, representing both the U19 and U20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain made it to the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to either full national side, who are watching his progress with interest.

Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision yet. Things are positive with Spain, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."

This scenario echoes that of other dual nationality talents such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. While teenage Lamine chose Spain, Brahim opted to represent the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Real side and rewarding his manager's belief.

He played 74 minutes in the 2-1 win at City, which sealed a five-one overall triumph and a last-eight tie with the German champions.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in younger players to help the club chase trophies to come.

After his impressive impact so far on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"The manager handles me the same. We handle it very normally. I try not to think about it excessively - I have to deserve my playing time on the pitch," he commented following the win at Manchester.
